Date of debate: Thurs. 6/23 Mini Debate #1

Debating on: Neg
Instructor/commentator: Katie
Comments:
-Really smart analytical arguments with some impact calculus
-Try to work on word economy and cut out filler words (ummm, like like like, etc.)
-Remember that debate isn't a dance competition - don't bounce around while you speak!

Date of debate: 6/24

Debating on: Constellation Aff
Instructor/commentator: Chris Crowe
Comments:
Started too fast. You don't have to start slowly, but a majority of the time, a judge will be hearing you for the first time. Start reasonably and build up speed. Let everyone get used to your speaking style or they are going to miss some arguments.

Good job going through the analyticals, but don't ramble too much (e.g. "nobody wants to go in space, what's out there anyway, black stuff?")

Sometimes you slow down considerably to say something that isn't even a real argument, like, "That's not even really a turn, anyway."

Cussing. Don't do it. I could don't personally mind if you swear (most of the time), but if you have to WARN a judge that you might swear before a debate, you have a bad habit. Many lab leaders will not care if you swear, but you're at camp to develop GOOD habits, not perpetuate BAD ones. Debate like you would during the season. Short of a medical excuse, there's not a compelling reason to swear.

Date of debate: 6/25

Debating on: T - Its = U.S. only
Instructor/commentator: Mikaela
Comments: You started out VERY unclear! And too fast to start -- Chris already told you that you should build up speed rather than launching in at full blast. This is ESPECIALLY true with T and theory.
Good explanation of the violation in response to the we meet.
Explain WHY the aff/interpretation is unpredictable.
You need to explain why "we can't win without T" -- i.e. why it's a voting issue and why competing interpretations is good.

Date of debate: 6/27

Debating on: Constellation aff - heg and NMD (2AC)
Instructor/commentator: Kathryn Kernoff
Comments: Your 2AC was somewhat hard to understand, although not unflowable. Work on hard numbering your arguments and giving your analytical arguments tags. Good job making multiple arguments against each 1NC answer, including indicting their evidence. Don't shy away from arguments when there's clash!

Date of debate: 6/29

Debating on: assumed Constellation 1AC and Spending Disad
Instructor/commentator: Leeann, Chaitali and Liam
Comments: - good strategic questions in CX, but don't be flippant with responses like "I am not a fortune teller" on legit clarifications, these can be used against you not just in speaker points, but when a team runs an abuse argument and claims you did not provide plan clarification when asked
- always use all your speech time
- avoid "crutch" words - today you said "again" many, many times
- more timeframe analysis is needed on the disad, both teams should be battling for access to impacts and the disad debate should have a thorough discussion of timeframe, brink/threshhold, etc

Date of debate: 7/1

Debating on: CP/Theory mini debate
Instructor/commentator: Katie & Joel
Comments:
Be much clearer – you’re trying to go faster than maybe you can – you also sometimes speak in an inconsistent manner (slower/faster/louder/softer at various parts of your speech)
Also – there is no reason to speak quickly if you’re going to finish with almost 4 minutes left!
Make some framing arguments in the 2NR about the CP - Ex: “Even if it doesn’t solve 100%... disad still outweighs/turns the case, etc”
You have good responses in cross-x, but try to minimize how much you speak during your partner's cross-x - it can undermine her credibility and also make you look kinda mean (even though I don't think you are!)
Keep up the hard work - you're making smart arguments that will get you far in debates

Date of debate: 7/1

Debating on: Rebuttal Redo
Instructor/commentator: Zach Markovich
Comments:

Structure your impx calc to be more offensive -- rather than starting out with defensive answers to reasons their impact outweigh, put a reason why your impx is bigger on top.

Address the link debate on the disad. You need to establish a link turn. Without an offensive answer to the disad your probably in bad shape.

Spend more time on impx defense.

Date of debate: 7/7

Debating on: Practice Round 1 vs. SPS Aff
Instructor/commentator: David
Comments: Work on line by line. Also try to explain the way your args fit together. Is the DA a net benefit to your cp etc.

Date of debate: 7/7

Debating on: Redo 1AAR on SPS
Instructor/commentator: David
Comments: Good arguments. Have more offense. Also put impact calc and case more towards the top of your speech.

Date of debate: 7/7

Debating on: practice round C
Instructor/commentator: Nicole
Comments:
START SLOW and then speed up. Instead you start fast and then slow down which is less helpful. Work on enunciation to make sure you sound clear as you speed up on cards

Cx – Good answer about how some of the benefits of the aff occur sooner than when we get energy from SBSP.

Cx of 1ac – you should stand. Also, you are beating on the same question over and over – move on if they don’t give the answer you want.
Also questions like “ what does this answer even mean” is less helpful then “ what is the warrant for this” or “ given x and y, why is z true”

Cx of 2nc – shhhh – you should be prepping and not bicking with the 2n!

1ar –
no swearing in your speech! You did it like 5 times!
Reference 2ac arguments when signposting
I’m not sure when you say “turn the kritik” you’re quite describing a turn. Also, dropping take outs does not make it a turn. You should describe why those arguments disprove the logical argument of the K
If you go for the link turn, you probably shouldn’t do the uniqueness overwhelms the link. Instead, invest time on reading a few non-unique and try to fight that battle. You spend a LOT of time on U overwhelms the link
Why did you kick the econ adv?
Asteroids the 1nr is allowed to read new cards on same arguments. Also, why kick this? It was ONE argument you could quickly answer to get the full extinction impact.
Again, the heg advantage has a diversity of arguments that is tough for the aff to cover. Strategically group chunks of arguments to make that easier.

If you were to redo this rebuttal, I’d want you to
  1. 1. Go line by line and do more explanation on the Kritik
  2. 2. Do not kick BOTH the asteroid advantage and go for it
  3. 3. Be more meticulous about either grouping (and saying that you are) or answering each neg arg on the Leadership advantage.

Date of debate: 7/8

Debating on:redo from other prac debate
Instructor/commentator: Nicole
Comments:
You should extend by arguments - that's good - but reference cite.
You are also tag line extending a lot of evidence - warrants are important!
If you "still get your econ impacts" you should describe what that is.

Take 2 -
explain why the cp DOESN"T link to the NB
don't just say they dropped the warrants for solvency of the cp - also extend them
you may want to still answer each perm separately if you have time left.

Date of debate: 7-11

Debating on: aff SSP
Instructor/commentator: Ken
Comments: 1AC is really difficult to understant -- wake uo earlier, try moving your lips, or best of all just try slowing down some. IAR is clear and easy to understand. Coverage off case is good, but you compound the 2AC coverage problems by dropping the advantages he went for and going for the ones dropped in 2AC. Answers on the K are good; you're a little thin on politics. Your making way too big a deal out of 'no spillover" on politics when there still isn't an aff card or warrant. Bipart support doesn't meanmuch more than there are members of each party who support; it doesn't mean there is much support.
Decision: neg. The risk on politics is enough vs no case -- since the aff never extended any advantage in two consecutive speeches
